Writing for AI Overviews: claim-complete paragraphs that can be quoted

AI answer surfaces do not present your page. They lift a sentence or two from it and recombine them with other sources. That changes what "good writing" means for a service business: each important paragraph has to survive being read alone. If the quoted fragment depends on a heading three screens up to make sense, a model will either skip it or, worse, fill the gap itself.
At AERVIO, we call the fix *claim-complete paragraphs*. It is the practical core of how we approach GEO, building on what we describe in SEO and GEO in Montreal.
What Google says you need to do
Less than the marketplace of GEO tools would suggest. Google's documentation on AI features and your website states that the same fundamentals apply as for regular Search: pages must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and there are no additional requirements, special markup or new files to create. That means no secret schema, no required `llms.txt`, and no second website for machines.
So the work is ordinary and unglamorous: crawlable HTML, honest content, clear structure. The part that is within your control is the *writing*.
The five parts of a claim-complete paragraph
A paragraph is claim-complete when a stranger who reads only that paragraph can answer five questions:
- Who is acting? Name the company, not "we" or "our team" with no antecedent.
- For whom? The audience or situation.
- Where? Place, region, or language, if it matters.
- How does it start, and what does it involve? The concrete step or condition.
- What is the limit? What you do not do, what depends on something else, or what is not guaranteed.
The fifth part is the one most companies omit, and it is the one that makes a claim trustworthy. A paragraph without a limit reads like a brochure. A paragraph with one reads like an operator.
Before and after
Before:
We offer a wide range of digital solutions tailored to your needs, delivering results that drive growth for clients worldwide.
This cannot be quoted. It names no subject, no audience, no place and no limit, and any model that repeats it adds nothing true.
After:
AERVIO is a Montreal studio that builds and maintains websites, CRMs and search visibility for Canadian small and mid-sized businesses. A project starts with a discovery call on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern, followed by a written proposal. We do not guarantee search rankings, and we do not use rented contact lists.
That paragraph names the entity, the audience, the place, the entry point and two limits. A system can lift it whole. It would also be hard to misquote, because nothing important depends on context outside the paragraph.
Apply it where it counts
You do not need to rewrite a whole site. Apply the pattern to the paragraphs most likely to be quoted:
- The first paragraph under each H2. Answer the heading directly, then elaborate. If the H2 is "How does a project start?", the first sentence states how.
- Service descriptions. One claim-complete paragraph per service, in plain language.
- About and contact pages. Hours, language of service, contact route and service area, stated plainly. For AERVIO: weekdays 9–17 ET, hello@aervio.io, +1 438-498-3913, Montreal base, Canada served.
- Pricing and process pages. What is included, what is billed separately, what a first engagement looks like.
- FAQ answers. Short, direct, each one understandable without the question beside it.
Structure that helps without gaming
Format supports the writing but does not replace it:
- Descriptive headings phrased as the question a buyer asks.
- Short paragraphs, one claim each, rather than long blocks with five claims fused together.
- Tables for decisions, such as which stack fits which team, as in Next.js or WordPress for a Quebec business.
- Dates and ownership. A visible publish and update date, and the studio named as author with a real contact route.
- Consistent facts across the site, the Google profile and any structured data, since contradictions give a system reason to distrust you.
Things we deliberately do not do
Some GEO advice is just SEO spam with a new label. We avoid it:
- Invented statistics and case-study percentages. If we cannot source a number, it does not appear. A fabricated figure is the fastest way to be cited wrongly and then corrected publicly.
- Buying mentions or placing content on low-quality sites to manufacture authority. Google's spam policies are clear that manipulative tactics are unwelcome.
- Keyword-stuffed Q&A blocks written for machines. They read badly to people and add no information.
- Hidden text or content shown only to crawlers. Anything markup claims must be visible to users.
- Claims we cannot back. "Best agency in Montreal" is not a claim; it is noise.
French is not an afterthought
For Quebec, the same discipline applies in French, written as French rather than translated line by line. A French-speaking buyer asking a French question should reach a French page that makes complete claims in its own idiom. Our approach to the underlying structure is in Bill 96 and your website; the legal line is for your counsel, and the pages are ours to build well.
Measuring something real
Because citation cannot be guaranteed, we measure what we can observe and what matters to the business:
- Impressions and clicks for informational queries in Search Console
- Calls, form submissions and CRM records with a recorded source, as described in one system for site, CRM and search
- Whether the brand and the contact details appear correctly when we manually check relevant questions on AI surfaces
We treat those manual checks as spot samples, not as a dashboard to optimize. Answers vary by user, location and day, and a screenshot is not a trend.
A fifteen-minute test
Pick your most important service page. Copy the first paragraph under each heading into a blank document, one at a time, with the headings removed. For each, ask: does it say who, for whom, where, how it starts and what the limit is? If a paragraph fails, rewrite it until it passes on its own. Most pages need five to ten rewrites, not a rebuild.
If you want help with that pass, write to hello@aervio.io or call +1 438-498-3913, weekdays 9–17 ET. We will mark up your priority pages, tell you what to rewrite first and what to leave, and be straight about what writing alone can and cannot do.
Questions
Do I need special markup or a file like llms.txt to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google states that the same fundamentals apply as for Search: your page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Special AI files or markup are not required. Clear, complete, accurate text in public HTML is what a system can quote.
What is a claim-complete paragraph?
A paragraph that carries its own context. It names the subject, the audience, the place, the action or condition, and any limit, so that a reader or a model who sees only that paragraph still understands it correctly and cannot easily misquote it.
Can you guarantee that my site will be cited in AI answers?
No. Citation depends on what the user asks, what competitors publish and how Google's systems choose sources. We can make your pages crawlable, accurate and quotable, and we measure queries, calls and CRM records rather than promising mentions.
